PRIME Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob and PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan must be investigated for possible abuse of office over an agreement to appoint a deputy prime minister from Bersatu when the former became prime minister last year, DAP said.

DAP chairman Lim Guan Eng said the agreement, which recently came to light, was for “selfish political interests” and not the people’s benefit.

Takiyuddin recently admitted that he had drafted the agreement in his capacity as a minister in the Prime Minister’s Department and not as a representative of his party.

He said he did so because he was in charge of all legal documents pertaining to the government.

Lim called Takiyuddin’s statement a “public admission” of power abuse for the benefit of the prime minister and Perikatan Nasional

“DAP condemns the irresponsible attitude of the current government leaders in treating their public positions as private property to be misused and abused for narrow and sectarian political interests.

“Will MACC act independently to probe both the prime minister and Takiyuddin or will it once again prove itself to be a political tool to be weaponised for the benefit of the current government?” Lim said in a statement today.

In August last year, Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri succeeded Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin as prime minister.

The two signed an agreement the same month for the prime minister to grant government positions to Bersatu members in exchange for support.

These positions included the office of deputy prime minister. However, none was named for the position and four senior ministers were appointed instead. – July 15, 2022.
