Police arrest boyfriend of woman in Crackhouse Comedy Club incident

POLICE arrested the boyfriend of the woman who allegedly insulted Islam with her open mic spot at the Crackhouse Comedy Club in Kuala Lumpur over the weekend.

Bukit Aman secretary Noorsiah Mohd Saaduddin said in a statement that the man was arrested yesterday, adding that he will be remanded for three days to assist in investigations.

As for the woman, Noorsiah said, police will also be applying to extend her three-day remand order, which ends tomorrow.

She also said the investigation paper will be referred to the Attorney-General’s Chambers along with the suggested charges.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has ordered the club in Taman Tun Dr Ismail to close temporarily after a video of the woman removing her outer clothing and hijab to reveal a mini skirt underneath went viral.

Deputy Federal Territories Minister Jalaluddin Alias said the decision to close the club was to send a message that the ministry and DBKL will not tolerate behaviour disrespecting the sensitivities of religion, race or sovereignty.

Earlier, Segambut MP Hannah Yeoh has also joined calls for DBKL to unseal the comedy club and let it resume operations, saying the local authority was punishing the wrong party.

She said the venue, where a woman allegedly insulted Islam with her open mic spot, is only a platform while the content creator was the offending party who has now been “rightfully arrested”.

Tagging DBKL in a tweet, Yeoh said it should now “unseal that place once the investigation is done.

“Punishing a platform is like sealing a cinema because of a bad movie,” she said. – July 11, 2022.
