THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has launched a probe into foreign worker registration management system company Bestinet Sdn Bhd over supply of workers from Bangladesh, chief commissioner Azam Baki said.

He told The Malaysian Insight that MACC has raided several premises in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor in connection with the case. 

“No arrest has been made so far but the founder of the company had his statement recorded,” he said. 

“The founder will be called again for further questioning.”  

Earlier, sources confirmed that MACC raided Bestinet following complaints of dubious selection of 25 Bangladesh recruiting agencies tasked with sending their workers here. 

Sources said Malaysia and Bangladesh had agreed to appoint 25 recruitment agencies from 1,000 eligible companies as listed by Bangladesh. 

“It is believed that most of the companies are linked to the owner of Bestinet,” Azam said. 

“Many foreign workers who are interested in working are charged large amounts, reaching tens of thousands of ringgit.”  

According to sources, the issue was raised by several civil society groups and politicians who expressed dissatisfaction with the monopoly. 

“By limiting to only 25 companies, other firms do not have the opportunity to do business. 

“MACC’s investigation is focused on allegations of corruption and abuse of power involving two ministries,” Azam said without naming the ministries involved. 

Meanwhile, efforts to get comments from the Bangladesh High Commission were unsuccessful. – July 6, 2022.
