EIGHT youths involved in the student unions’ #Turun Speakers’ Corner protest that took place at Pasar Seni yesterday have been called up by the Dang Wangi district police headquarters.

In a joint statement, the Gabungan Gerakan Mahasiswa student body coalition called on the authorities not to intimidate those who took part in the peaceful gathering.

The group believes that the right to assemble is enshrined in the Federal Constitution.

“We, the student bodies, are in solidarity (with those who are called to the police station) and demand that the authorities not intimidate those involved.

“We are of the view that there is no need to investigate them because the right to assemble is enshrined in the constitution,” they said in a statement.

Yesterday, some 200 people attended the #Turun Speakers’ Corner protest at Pasar Seni, Kuala Lumpur.

Led by a coalition of student bodies from various universities, several students took the mic to air their grievances over the alleged lack of concrete action by the government to tackle the rising cost of living in the country.

The group added that by calling the eight people to the police station for questioning, the students are being denied of their rights.

“Corrupt ministers are allowed to rule but students have their rights silenced,” they added.

The students are demanding salary cuts for ministers and their deputies, adequate aid to be provided to the people, the current subsidies to be maintained without reducing other subsidies, food security issues to be solved, and prices of goods and food to be controlled.

The group added that they will organise another protest in the weeks to come if the government fails to take heed of their demands. – July 3, 2022.
