PAKATAN Harapan (PH) has invited two international agencies to observe the 14th general election, said chairman of the opposition pact Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Dr Mahathir, who is also Bersatu chairman, said they had already sent letters to both the Commonwealth Secretariat and the United Nations (UN).

“Even though we have requested for international observers, it’s up to the government to give the approval.

“This was one of the issues discussed at the PH presidential council meeting today,” he said at Bersatu’s office in Petaling Jaya.

Dr Mahathir said if the government does not allow the international observers, then the secretariat and UN should pay serious attention to how the election would be held.

“If they don’t allow them, then the government is abusing its powers once again to gain victory in the election.”

Dr Mahathir was the only Malaysian prime minister who had invited international observers to monitor the election during his tenure.

He had allowed international observers from the Commonwealth Secretariat to monitor the 1990 general election, after the Umno split in 1987.

Barisan Nasional had attacked the opposition on a meeting between ambassadors of the European Union (EU) and PH leaders led by Dr Mahathir.

The meeting, held at the residence of ambassador and head of delegation of the EU to Malaysia, Maria Castillo Fernández, was focused on pressuring Prime Minister Najib Razak’s administration to ensure the election was conducted fairly. – February 20, 2018.

  • Well done, there are many more potential GE14 observers from Japan, S.Korea, India, Indonesia, Australia, Canada, USA, etc.

  • If there is nothing to hide then they must allow observers. Otherwise why dont allow since the people have a trust deficit with the current government. Have to be more careful with the postal votes this time.
