SABAH People’s Unity Party president Mohd Arshad Abdul Mualap has been arrested over his involvement in an identity card scam, Home Minister Hamzah Zainuddin said today.

“This syndicate claims people who hold the card sold will later be given the Malaysian identity card (IC),” he said in a press conference today.

According to him, he received a tipoff from a foreigner abroad regarding this syndicate.

“Once we got the tipoff, I discussed it with the Inspector-general of police, and informed a special unit to investigate the matter.”

Another individual named Mohamad Amkah Ahmad was also arrested along with Arshad.

They were brought to Shah Alam court this morning to be remanded.

Hamzah said the individuals were arrested at their homes in Subang Jaya.

“They probably have made fake IC’s for over 100 individuals.”

“Initial investigations found hundreds of individuals duped by the syndicate,” he said.

The Sabah party is believed to have been in existence since 2006, but was only officially registered as a political party in 2014.

In the 2013 general election, Arshad stood against then chief minister Musa Aman for the Sibuga seat as an independent, but only received 200 out of 28,800 votes. – June 30, 2022.
