Tourism Ministry targets 900,000 Muslim tourists this year

THE Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry is targeting for 900,000 Muslim tourists to visit Malaysia this year, said minister Nancy Shukri.

She said this can be achieved by proactively promoting the country as a Muslim-friendly destination at the national and international levels.

“After borders reopened on April 1, the ministry has held a series of working visits to promote tourism products, including Islamic tourism, abroad.

“It will also identify additional activities that can be carried out at 6,000 mosques nationwide, as an added value to existing promotions,” she told a press conference in Putrajaya today.

A total of 460,000 Muslim tourists visited Malaysia as of April.

The ministry is targeting for 230 million Muslim tourists by 2028, with projected revenue of US$225 billion (RM990 billion).

Nancy said the plethora of Muslim-friendly facilities are among the factors that attract Muslim tourists to the country.

“Tourists also do not have to doubt the status of halal food.”
