THE general election should be held as soon as possible to ensure a stable government, PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said, in a departure from previous statements preferring polls to be held next year.
He said it is PAS’ own view that the federal government, which the Islamist party is part of, should complete its five-year term, which expires in 2023.
“Ideally, the government should complete the term. But seeing the situation where a stable government is needed, then it is better for GE15 to be held immediately. We must look at the situation,” he said in Terengganu today.
Hadi was commenting on Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s view that GE15 should be held next year.
The Marang MP had previously been against an early GE15, citing the Covid-19 pandemic and poor economy.
The national polls must be held by mid-September 2023 at the latest ,which is 60 days after Parliament’s automatic dissolution on July 16.
Hadi today also affirmed PAS will continue using the Perikatan Nasional (PN) logo in GE15.
He said those who proposed that the party return to using its own logo were merely sharing their personal views. These include central committee member Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki and PAS spiritual leader Hashim Jasin.
“We have been using the PN symbol (lately),” Hadi said.
PAS candidates stood under the PN logo in the Malacca and Johor elections. The Islamist party is a member of the PN coalition led by Bersatu.
However, in the Malacca polls, PAS failed to win any seat and in Johor, it only won one. – June 24, 2022.
