EMPLOYEES can apply for flexible working arrangement to their respective employers under an Employment Act 1955 amendment, which will come into effect on September 1.
Deputy Human Resources Minister Awang Hashim said the application must be made in writing, and can cover changes in working days and hours, as well as place of work.
“The employer must agree or reject the application in writing within 60 days and give reasons why the application is rejected,” he told reporters in Alor Star, Kedah, today.
A study on four-day work weeks is also ongoing to ensure employers do not suffer severe effects if the move is implemented in future, he added.
“Studies are still being conducted. So far, we have seen that four-day work weeks have not reduced employee productivity. If there are employers who are affected, we will take it into account and discuss further.”
Economist Professor Barjoyai Bardai yesterday said Malaysia is not ready to implement four-day work weeks due low productivity. – Bernama, June 23, 2022.
