Govt introducing floating ceiling prices for food, says PM

THE government will introduce a floating ceiling price for food to ensure subsidies reach the targeted groups, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob said today.

He said this will be based on the input prices.

“Government linked companies and government linked investment companies will also be asked to participate in the agri-food industries to ensure adequate supply,” Ismail said in a statement after chairing the Economic Action Council meeting today.

“As an example, poultry prices can be better controlled if government agencies are involved in the ecosystem of supplying feed, chicks, transport and marketing,” he added.

He said federal and state governments will also work to expand the land needed for agriculture purposes to reduce Malaysia’s reliance on food imports.

Meanwhile, Ismail said the EAC has also decided to cut the time needed for the intake of foreign workers from the targeted six to 12 months, to two months.

“Foreign worker interviews will be done in the states instead of the one-stop centre at the Human Resources Ministry in Putrajaya,” he said.

To help the electrical and electronics sector overcome the manpower shortage, the government will also hold a ‘Train and Place’ programme for 1,000 engineers and 1,000 technicians.

He said that the government will also speed up the mechanism for the hiring of expatriates. – June 13, 2022.
