THE Dewan Rakyat will convene for a special sitting in the first week of July for the tabling of an anti party-hopping bill, parliament and law minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar said.

The parliamentary select committee (PSC) has called for the sitting after finalising the draft bill for tabling and debate, he said.

“The PSC had also addressed five policy questions on the bill that were raised by the cabinet at a meeting on June 1.

“The PSC’s feedback on these questions will  be discussed at the next cabinet meeting,” the minister in the Prime Minister’s Department said in a statement today.

The bill to curb party-hopping by elected representatives is one of the items in the memorandum of understanding between Pakatan Harapan and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who took office in August.

The Malaysian Insight reported today that among the proposals in the bill are that MPs and assemblymen whose parties leave the coalition on whose ticket they stood for election will have to vacate their seats. – June 8, 2022.
