MANY Australian doctors are experiencing burnout amid intense pressure on the healthcare system, suggested a survey.
Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) outgoing president John Wilson said a RACP survey found that 87% of doctors are experiencing burnout, potentially causing major risks to patient safety, reported Xinhua.
The revelation comes amid a “perfect storm” of surging coronavirus cases, staff shortages and the resurgence of influenza after health restrictions were relaxed.
Wilson last month resigned after 30 years from a hospital in Melbourne, declaring he can no longer work in a “failing” system.
“It is at a stage now where practitioners, not only in medicine but also allied health and nursing, are all thinking, ‘Why am I doing this? It is not good for my health and may be dangerous’,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation today.
“Doctors are run off their feet and getting burned out. Beds are not available and waiting times are growing.
“The healthcare system that we are working in at the moment is failing, and the evidence of that is absolutely clear.”
Australia reported more than 20,000 new Covid-19 cases and 19 deaths today.
