THE Special Cabinet Committee on Anti-Corruption said an integrity and anti-corruption course will be made compulsory at all higher learning institutions in the country from next year.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) deputy chief commissioner for prevention Norazlan Mohd Razali said the course will enable students to have a better understanding of graft and its impact, not only on themselves but also the nation.
“We are worried that young adults who are already working will be tempted by bribes.
“This course will provide exposure to students so they do not receive or give bribes to anyone.”
Based on the latest MACC data, 275 youth, aged between 18 and 30, were arrested for corruption offences from 2020 to June 3, 2022. Of the total, 231 were men.
A total of 151 youth were charged in court during the same period, of which 11 were aged 18 to 23 and 140 were aged 24 to 30. Of the 151 youth, 85 were convicted.
“This data should serve as a reminder to students that among the youth involved are former IPT students,” said Norazlan.
“Corruption temptations exist, especially when they enter the professional world.”
MACC also encourages student leaders to help spread anti-corruption messages and guidelines via education initiatives. – Bernama, June 4, 2022.
