THE death toll has risen to 128 from heavy rain in Brazil, said local authorities yesterday.
More than 9,300 people have been evacuated and 34 municipalities declared states of emergency, Pernambuco governor Paulo Camara told a press conference, as quoted by Xinhua.
He said rescue efforts for possible survivors have also come to an end.
Pernambuco recorded heavy rain since last week, which intensified over the weekend, killing more than 100 people, mostly at foothills where major landslides occurred.
The state government will compensate the families of the deceased and give 1,500 reals (RM1,378) to all those displaced by the disaster, many of whom lost all their property.
The heavy rain also affected the Brazilian states of Alagoas, Paraiba, Sergipe and Rio Grande do Norte. – Bernama, June 4, 2022.
