THE Health Ministry (MOH) will consider the request of the Association of Private Hospitals, Malaysia (APHM) to allow the employment of foreign trained nurses, Deputy Health Minister Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali said.

He said this followed a shortage of nurses in specialised medical fields in Malaysia.

“There is a request from APHM for specialised nurses from abroad to assist our country as there is a shortage of such personnel,” he said.

“At one time, MOH allowed (employment of trained nurses from abroad) and later disallowed it. I will bring this matter to the minister (Khairy Jamaluddin) when he returns from Geneva.”

Noor Azmi was speaking at a press conference after officiating at the 28th APHM International Healthcare Conference and Exhibition 2022 in Kuala Lumpur today.

Also present was APHM president Dr Kuljit Singh, who said the association is in the process of training its own nurses.

“At the same time, we are calling for the employment of trained nurses from abroad to be permitted to assist in resolving the current shortage of such personnel in private hospitals,” he said. – Bernama, May 31, 2022.
