UNIVERSITI Utara Malaysia (UUM) has rescinded its gag order prohibiting students from speaking publicly or attending events over the death of student S. Vinosiny.
The university clarified today that students are allowed to participate in events but cautioned them to be mindful of their actions.
“The university does not prohibit any students from being involved in any activities to show solidarity with the late Vinosiny.
“However, the university advises students to be mindful of any action, as the case is still under investigation by authorities,” said UUM’s corporate communications department in a statement today.
The clarification comes in the wake of a statment by UUM last Friday that it will ban students from holding candle light vigil to honour Vinosiny.
The university had also allegedly threatened to take disciplinary actions against students who violate the order.
Vinosiny, 20, an accounting student, was found dead in her room at the UUM Sintok campus in Kedah.
Her family has claimed that she died of electrocution but police are still waiting on the post-mortem report.
Her father, R. Sivakumar has lodged a police report against the university citing possible negligence by administrators.
He is also mulling legal action against the university. – May 31, 2022.
