THE Entrepreneur Development and Cooperatives Ministry will propose that the Education Ministry upgrade school cooperatives to Coopmarts to enable goods there to be sold at lower prices to the public. 

Its minister Noh Omar said as the first step, his ministry will hold discussions with the Education Ministry on rules and location suitability. 

“We will discuss with the (Education) Ministry and also district education offices the rules for outsiders to enter school compounds. 

“There are rules in schools as we know, therefore, we will also discuss safety as well as the appropriate location of the shop so that members of the public do not have to enter the school grounds,” he said after officiating the annual general meeting of the Parent-Teachers Association of SMK Seri Desa in Selangor today. 

Noh said basic goods in Coopmarts cooperatives would be supplied by the National Cooperative Force through the 100 Basic Goods Supply Programme. 

“We encourage schools to have Coopmarts because when a cooperative gets Coopmart status, it will be given a subsidy where goods can be sold at a lower price,” he added. – Bernama, May 28, 2022.
