THE Fire and Rescue Department’s diving team today succeeded in retrieving the body of a man who drowned after his car plunged into Sungai Batang in Sibu, Sarawak, last night.

Sibu Central Fire and Rescue Station chief Suna Kahar said the victim was identified as Andy Ting King Dieng, 43, by family members, who kept vigil during the search at the scene near a hotel in Jalan Lanang.

The dive operation started at 8.57am and the car was found at 2.55pm, he added.

“The car was hoisted out using a crane at 3.49pm. We found the victim still trapped in the vehicle.

“The victim was successfully removed at 4.04pm and confirmed dead by Health Ministry staff.”

State Public Health, Housing and Local Government Deputy Minister Michael Tiang, who rushed to the scene, offered his condolences to the victim’s family. – Bernama, May 27, 2022.
