DESPITE the sharp increase in hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases in Malacca, the state will shut all nurseries and kindergartens only if it receives a directive from the Health Ministry.

Malacca Women Affairs, Family Development and Welfare Committee chairman Kalsom Nordin said only 11 childcare centres have been ordered to close so far, following the HFMD outbreak in the state.

“There has yet to be any instruction to close all nurseries, kindergartens and day-care centres,” she told reporters today.

Media reports said Malacca recorded a significant hike in HFMD cases, with 977, during the 18th epidemiological week this year compared with only 95 cases in the same period last year.

State Health Department director Dr Rusdi Abd Rahman said the 11 childcare centres are in Jasin (7 centres), Melaka Tengah (3) and Alor Gajah (1). – Bernama, May 17, 2022.
