THE parliamentary select committee in charge of constitutional amendments concerning anti-party hopping has reached a consensus and asked the Attorney-General’s Chamber to draft an anti-party hopping bill, said chair Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

The consensus is reached at the committee’s fourth meeting yesterday, after taking into account policies and recommendations by academics, civil society groups and other experts.

“Almost all policy-level decisions to draft an anti-party hopping bill are finalised,” said the law minister on Facebook.

“The meeting has successfully resolved policy issues… There is now a consensus on how the law will be implemented.”

Present at the meeting chaired by Wan Junaidi were Azalina Othman Said (Pengerang-BN), Gobind Singh Deo (Puchong-PH), Hamzah Zainudin (Larut-Bersatu), Ignatius Dorell Leiking (Penampang-Warisan), Lukanisman Awang Sauni (Sibuti-GPS), Mohamed Hanipa Maidin (Sepang-PH), Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz (Padang Rengas-BN), Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (Kulim-Bandar Baharu-PH), Takiyuddin Hassan (Kota Baru-PAS) and Wilfred Madius Tangau (Tuaran-Upko).

Wan Junaidi said his committee will review the draft law in a meeting on May 19.

The Political Transformation and Stability Steering Committee will also review the draft law, he added.

“It is hoped that the draft law can be tabled as scheduled. As such, in-depth discussions on its implementation were done today, to ensure approval is obtained from the prime minister and Political Transformation and Stability Steering Committee.”

The bill is part of a memorandum of understanding between Putrajaya and Pakatan Harapan, signed on September 13.
