NURUL Ilham Anwar was shocked that police are investigating her attendance at a gathering calling for the release of her father two years ago.
“I was shocked when I was being investigated for a case that happened two years ago, when I attended a solidarity gathering to call for my father’s release shortly after he was imprisoned,” Nurul Ilham told a press conference at PKR headquarters today.
The daughter of former opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim earlier spent 10 minutes with officers at the Klang Selatan police station to record her statement.
She declined to answer their questions.
Nurul Ilham claimed that the police investigation under Section 9 of the Peaceful Assembly Act was to create undue pressure on herself and her family over their commitment to secure Anwar’s release.
“At this moment, we (my siblings and I) understand the pressures and tribulations that our mother faces,” she said.
“For our father and mother, as well as the victimised Malaysian people, we pledge to continue this struggle with an open heart.”
Nurul Ilham’s counsel G. Manivannan, who is also Kapar MP, said his client had attended the gathering on Feb 15, 2015.
“A report was lodged by the Klang Selatan deputy police chief the same day. We are not sure who organised the gathering, but Nurul Ilham had attended as an invited guest.”
Manivannan said police had disclosed that several attendees of the gathering had been investigated but would not reveal their identities. – May 26, 2017.
