Malaysia-Thailand border pass valid for travel starting today

PEOPLE in Malaysia and Thailand can now travel between the two countries using a border pass starting today.

Perlis Border Relations and Cooperation Committee chairman Ruzaini Rais the two nations have allowed the use of the pass to facilitate travel to spur economic recovery.

He said travellers who wish to use a border pass must apply to do so on the Thailand Pass website 24 hours ahead of departure.

“However, only residents in four states, Perlis, Kedah, north Perak and Kelantan, are allowed to use a border pass.

“Pass holders are also only allowed to stay in Thailand for three days,” he said after visiting the Immigration, Customs and Quarantine Complex (ICQ) in Padang Besar today.

Ruzaini said Thai pass holders are allowed to travel in Malaysia provided they are fully vaccinated.

He said the same standard operating procedure for passport holders applied for pass holders.

“They are also required to have travel insurance and undergo a health screening first,” he said.

Ruzaini said 82 people have crossed the Malaysia-Thailand border via the Padang Besar ICQ border gate as of 10am today.

He said the number of travellers is expected to increase within a week.

On April 1, the Wang Kelian border gate was reopened to citizens of Malaysia and Thailand after it was forced shut by the Covid-19 pandemic. – Bernama, May 5, 2022.
