36°C heat wave hits southern Taiwan

A HEAT alert has been put in place for southern Taiwan, with daytime temperatures expected to hit 36°C today, according to the Central Weather Bureau (CWB).

It said northern and eastern Taiwan are still under the effect of seasonal north-easterly winds, keeping temperatures below 30°C, reported Central News Agency.

Southern Taiwan, however, is shrouded in warm southerly winds that have brought mostly sunny skies, leading the bureau to issue an orange heat alert for Tainan city, Kaohsiung city and Pingtung county.

According to the CWB three-level heat advisory system, an orange alert points to temperatures reaching 36°C for three days in a row.

Mountainous areas and valleys in particular will experience scorching heat today, said the bureau.

Daytime temperature is expected to reach 29°C in northern Taiwan, with sporadic showers, while the temperature in central Taiwan and some parts of the south can see highs of 32°C to 34°C.

CWB said the warm weather in the south of the country is expected to continue into Friday, before the moisture in the atmosphere increases, bringing rain and slightly cooler temperatures on Saturday.

In addition to the heat advisory, it also warned of dense fog in the Kinmen and Matsu islands on today and tomorrow, and urged travellers to keep an eye on their flight schedules if flying on those days. – Bernama, April 27, 2022.
