ANTI-graft officials in Penang are questioning state Deputy Chief Minister II Dr P. Ramasamy this morning over the state’s undersea tunnel project.

Ramasamy arrived at the state Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) in George Town earlier today accompanied by his lawyer Aljit Singh Jessy.

“I was not directly involved in the undersea tunnel project and don’t know what they will ask me,” he was quoted as saying by The Star.

He is the second state executive councillor to be questioned on the project that has become political fodder between the DAP-led state government and the Barisan Nasional federal government.

Yesterday, Penang public works committee chairman Lim Hock Seng was questioned by the MACC for 13 hours and only released about 10pm last night.

The proposed tunnel from Bagan Ajam in Butterworth to Persiaran Gurney in George Town is part of a larger RM6.3 billion project.

It comprises three highways to reduce traffic congestion on Penang island.

Prime Minister Najib Razak has said Penang did not need the tunnel as there were already two bridges connecting the island to the mainland, but Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng subsequently noted that Najib had attended the signing of the memorandum of understanding in 2011 between the state government and the consortium in charge of the project. – February 14, 2018.
