THE Health Ministry must announce any move to lift the mask-wearing mandate along with clear advisory on the benefits and importance of wearing a mask, said Bandar Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii.

He said the ministry must continue to educate the people on the merits of mask-wearing in public.

“This can include an advisory for different communities or groups, especially those with vulnerable members or in close contact with vulnerable people, on why they should continue wearing masks outdoors.

“This can also include immunocompromised individuals or those who live with such individuals.”

The DAP lawmaker said it is good practice to continue mask-wearing and social distancing.

Unvaccinated people, including children, are at higher risk of hospitalisation and death from Covid-19.”

His comment comes as police made a U-turn on the need to wear masks in public.

Bukit Aman retracted its order to not fine individuals for not wearing masks just hours after police said they will stop issuing summons to those who unmask in public.

Yii said despite the U-turn, there is likelihood that such a mandate will be lifted, especially for outdoors.

Masks are a must in hospitals or healthcare facilities, where there are many vulnerable people.

At the end of the day, every decision on whether to relax restrictions must be based on data and science, even in endemicity.”

One reason why the country has not seen a vertical surge in cases despite Omicron is due to its conservative standard operating procedures, including the compulsory mask-wearing mandate, he added. – April 22, 2022.
