HEALTH Minister Khairy Jamaluddin has once again called for the youth smoking ban bill to be passed when tabled in Dewan Rakyat in July.

Khairy, in a tweet today, said the draft law will be a generational smoking endgame.

“Those born after 2005 will not be able to buy smoking products, ever. Enforcement will be an issue, and we will work hard on this. But let us shut the door shut once and for all for our youth.”

His retweeted a post by a local news organisation, which reported a survey showing that the policy is supported by 95% of respondents aged 24 and below and 89% of smokers and vapers.

In March, Khairy said a new law to ban smoking and the possession of any smoking product, including electronic cigarettes, for those born after 2005 will be tabled in Dewan Rakyat in July.

In February, he announced the introduction of the law, which aims to reduce the exposure of future generations to cigarettes and smoking products, as their consumption is a major factor in cancer cases and accounts for 22% of cancer deaths. – Bernama, April 20, 2022.
