THE Umno Supreme Council has unanimously voted to propose vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob as its candidate for prime minister in the next general election.

The announcement was made during the party’s buka puasa event, which took place after the party’s Supreme Council meeting at World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur today.

In a brief four-point statement, which was issued by party secretary-general Ahmad Maslan, the party also said the government’s memorandum of understanding with Pakatan Harapan should not be extended after it expires on July 31.

“And the tabling of anti-party hopping bill should continue without any pressure from other parties,” said Ahmad.

“Umno believes that the anti-party hopping law should be realised to protect voters’ rights.”

He also said Umno will hold a special delegates’ conference on May 14 to amend the party’s constitution.

He said the amendment will be on the party’s election term.

During the Umno general assembly last month, delegates passed a resolution for the party to hold its elections after the general election. – April 14, 2022.
