NINE individuals have been detained since Friday following an investigation into the RM2.3 billion corruption case involving projects linked to Petronas Carigali Sdn Bhd, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said.

The anti-graft body said in a statement that the investigation is the result of its cooperation and exchange of information with Petronas.

MACC also clarified that one of the nine individuals arrested is a junior executive from Petronas Carigali and not the chief executive officer, as reported by many.

“The other eight individuals are owners and senior officials of companies and vendors who carried out projects related to the scandal,” MACC added.

It was reported last week that the corruption racket involving Petronas Carigali officers and eight others took place between 2017 and 2021.

The suspects were detained upon arrival at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya and the Sarawak MACC office in Kuching to give statements.

Following their arrests, MACC froze 12 company and individual bank accounts, seized 10 luxury vehicles, cash in various currencies, gold bars, luxury watches and luxury handbags. – April 11, 2022.
