13,336 new Covid cases yesterday

MALAYSIA logged 13,336 new Covid-19 infections yesterday, well below the 13,944 recorded on February 8, the Health Ministry reported today.

The new cases yesterday took the cumulative Covid-19 infections to 4.15 million.

Health authorities early last month said Malaysia is fully in the Omicron wave, which has accounted for the high number of daily infections in recent weeks at more than or around 20,000.

Meanwhile, 54 Covid-19 deaths were reported yesterday, of which 16 were dead on arrival (DOA).

The 54 reported deaths were informed to the ministry by medical facilities over a 72-hour period, according to the current reporting protocol.

This means that the 54 deaths occurred within the last three days.

The death toll is now at 34,842, of which 7,348 are DOA cases.

Of the new infections reported yesterday, 6,509 were recorded in Selangor.

Other states and territories reporting new cases were Kuala Lumpur (1,317), Johor (856), Kedah (779), Penang (640), Negri Sembilan (488), Perak (482), Sarawak (470), Terengganu (418), Pahang (413), Kelantan (328), Malacca (309), Sabah (194), Perlis (52), Putrajaya (49) and Labuan (32).

As for the deaths, Selangor reported 13 cases while Perak reported nine. 

Kuala Lumpur reported eight, Kedah and Negri Sembilan (5 each), Johor, Sarawak and Terengganu (3 each), Kelantan and Malacca (2 each), and Penang (1).

No deaths was reported in Pahang, Perlis, Sabah, Putrajaya and Labuan.

The fatality rate stood at 0.3% and the cumulative fatality rate at 0.8%.

Health director-general Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said that 13,225 or 99.17% of the 13,336 new cases yesterday were in the least severe categories of 1 and 2.

He said only 111 (0.83%) of the total cases were in the serious categories of 3, 4 and 5.

“Of the 111 serious cases, 29 patients either had not been vaccinated or were not fully vaccinated.

“Forty-three of them had received two doses of vaccination but were not boosted, while the remaining 39 of them took their booster jabs.

“A total of 64 of them were aged 60 and above, while 60 patients have co-morbidities,” he said in a statement today. – March 29, 2022.
