MALAYSIA logged 16,863 new Covid-19 infections yesterday, the lowest in almost two months, the Health Ministry reported today.

The previous time the country logged fewer infections than yesterday was on February 8 with 13,944 cases.

Health authorities in early last month said Malaysia is fully in the Omicron wave, which has accounted for the high number of daily infections in recent weeks at more than or around 20,000.

The new cases yesterday took the cumulative Covid-19 infections to 4.13 million.

There were also 37 Covid-19 deaths reported yesterday, a rise in figure compared to the two previous days where 27 and 22 deaths were reported respectively.

Of the deaths, six were pronounced dead on arrival (DOA).

The ministry had earlier said not all daily deaths took place in a single day but were reported by medical facilities to the ministry within a 72-hour turnaround time.

This means that the 37 deaths occurred within the last three days.

The death toll is now at 34,751, of which 7,321 are DOA cases.

Of the new infections reported yesterday, more than half of them were logged in Selangor.

The most populous state registered 9,273 or 55% of the cases.

The fatality rate stood at 0.3% and the cumulative fatality rate, at 0.8%. – March 28, 2022.
