MAHFUZ Omar (Pokok Sena-PH) wants Dewan Rakyat speaker Azhar Azizan Harun to take action against the de facto law minister for “confusing the Dewan” on the anti-party hopping bill.
In a motion which he had filed, Mahfuz said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Parliament and Law) Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had previously said in Parliament that the bill was to be tabled during the current sitting.
“But up till now, the draft of the bill is yet to be presented, and tomorrow will be the last day of parliamentary sitting.
“So, the official reply (on the bill) that was given by Wan Junaidi has confused the Dewan.”
Last week, Wan Junaidi said the highly anticipated anti-party hopping bill needed further deliberation before it can be tabled in Parliament.
The bill, which also seeks to limit the tenure of the prime minister, needs the support of two-thirds of MPs as it also requires the Federal Constitution to be amended.
Wan Junaidi said more deliberation with Barisan Nasional and Perikatan Nasional was needed to obtain support of their MPs.
Mahfuz today said all lawmakers as well as the people are waiting for the bill to be tabled.
“That’s how important it is for this bill to be presented (now).
“Politicians cannot be political prostitutes.”
Mahfuz also agreed with Nazri Abdul Aziz (Padang Rengas-BN) that the bill should just be tabled first and revisions made later. – March 23, 2022.
