ADAM Adli can contest in the PKR election next month despite having been with the party for less than a year, said PKR Youth chief Akmal Nasir.
According to Akmal, there is a clause in the party constitution that allows for members who have been in the party for less than a year to contest in party elections.
“Flexibility is important to strengthen the organisation. Adam is not a total stranger in politics, just a newcomer to this organisation,” said Akmal today.
He said this to reporters after officiating the Gombak PKR youth and women wings’ division meetings today.
Akmal, who is current Johor Baru MP, sees no issue with Adam volunteering to contest the soon-to-be vacant PKR Youth chief position.
“For those planning to contest, they have to be a party member for at least a year. This is to ensure they understand and embrace the organisation prior to taking up responsibilities.
“However, in the election process, there is a clause that allows for exemption due to the possible need to fill certain vacancies, perhaps when a new division is created, which has happened before in Sabah and Sarawak,” said Akmal.
Akmal will not be defending his post this time.
Two former student activists Fahmi Zainol, who is Penang PKR Youth chief, and Adam Adli, are expected to vie for the position.
Fahmi joined PKR in 2015.
Akmal has not stated which position he will be contesting in the PKR election.
In his speech, Akmal warns party members to not allow the party election, which begins on April 8 with candidate nomination day, to split ranks and file in PKR.
PKR, he said, must display a good example to the people, convincing them that the party deserves to be chosen in the next general election.
“As we approach a crossroads, PKR will start its election next month, and I feel relieved to be handing the chief position back to our young members.
“My fear is the party losing the people’s trust because of the upcoming party election. If there is any sign of internal strife, then our strength will diminish in their eyes,” cautioned Akmal. – March 20, 2022.
