Almost 7% of electorate aged 18-21, says law minister

A TOTAL of 1.4 million (6.9%) voters in the country are between the ages of 18 and 21, said Law Minister Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.

He said the exact count is 1,441,794, according to the master electoral roll for 2021.

“The remaining 19.5 million (93.1%) voters are aged 21 and above,” he said in a written reply to Lim Lip Eng (Kepong-PH), who asked for the number of voters aged 18 to 21.

These young voters are among the 5.8 million people added to the electoral roll following the implementation of automatic voter registration and Undi18 at the end of last year.

Selangor is the state with the most voters in the age group, with 280,495 young voters out of a 3.63 million electorate.

Next is Johor with 176,618 young voters out of a 2.59 million electorate, Sarawak (133,015 out of 1.92 million), Sabah (131,458 out of 1.66 million) and Perak (116,923 out of 2.03 million).

Kedah has 111,173 young voters, Kelantan (103,192), Pahang (76,993), Penang (70,935), Terengganu (67,374), Kuala Lumpur (57,375), Negri Sembilan (53,973), Malacca (43,049) and Perlis (12,465).

Meanwhile, Putrajaya and Labuan have 3,460 and 3,296 Undi18 voters, respectively. – March 19, 2022.
