104 cases in Sarawak’s immigration cluster

THERE are now 104 cases in Sarawak’s largest Covid-19 cluster, as the state disaster management committee said another four new cases were reported today.

Kluster DTI Semuja 3 consists of people held at the Semuja Immigration Detention Centre in Serian with fresh cases reported every day since Thursday.

This is the third outbreak at the centre 58km from Kuching.

The index case is a 34-year-old detainee who was tested positive on March 7 in a mandatory Covid-19 test that was taken ahead of his court appearance.

Currently the state has five active clusters.

The disaster committee also reported there were three more deaths due to Covid-19 today, bringing the state’s death toll to 1,647.

The latest fatalities were elderly women from Sibu, aged 77, 90 and 91 respectively.

They each died within the past week but the cause of death was only confirmed today.

The number of new cases in the state dipped a little to 1,555 from the 1,867 cases yesterday.

Most of the cases were reported in the state’s four major cities: Kuching (660 cases), Miri (206), Bintulu (128) and Sibu (116). – March 16, 2022.
