CONCERNS over Covid-19 infection could be the reason for low voter turnout in the Johor state elections, which saw 50% voters recorded at 4 pm today compared to the Election Commission’s target of 70%.

Johor’s caretaker Menteri Besar Hasni Mohammad said the Covid-19 pandemic had made voters less enthusiastic to vote in the state polls this time.

“We found that many adult voters didn’t go out to vote because they may have been afraid of getting infected with Covid-19.

“They were not very passionate about voting and this involved all races, Malay, Chinese and Indians. As for senior citizens, it may be due to health reasons,” the Barisan Nasional candidate told reporters after casting his vote at Sekolah Kebangsaan Pengkalan Raja, Pekan Nanas here.
