MORE than 200 residents from 48 houses in Taman Bukit Permai 2, Ampang have been ordered to evacuate after cracks were found at the landslide site due to land movements.
Hulu Langat district officer Ani Ahmad said the order to evacuate immediately was issued to give space to the authorities to conduct a detailed study.
“Occupants of 48 houses in four lanes were directed to relocate to avoid any untoward incident considering the uncertain weather now,” he said in a press conference at the incident location.
“We are setting up a temporary evacuation centre at the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) community hall located near the landslide location.”
Ani said so far, no victims are at the evacuation centre as they choose to stay with relatives, hotels or homestays nearby.
Nonetheless, the centre is open to residents who wish to stay there temporarily.
Ani said a district disaster management committee involving several agencies, including MPAJ, Public Works Department, police and the Fire and Rescue Department, was set up to formulate a more organised strategy to handle the incident.
“So far, cleaning work could not be carried out as the stability of the slope has not been established,” he said.
The landslide in Taman Bukit Permai 2 at 5.54pm yesterday claimed four lives and left one person injured, apart from causing damage to 15 houses and 10 vehicles.
Police said the dead are A. Mahendra, 36; E. Ramasamy, 58; Mohd Saifullah Ridzuan Ishak, 34; and Chong Siew Kim, 85. The one who escaped with injuries is Cheng Kim Cheng, 85.
Ampang Jaya police chief Mohamad Farouk Eshak said all the deceased were taken to Ampang Hospital and had been identified by their family members.
“The injured victim is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital,” he said. – Bernama, March 11, 2022.
