THE Department of Islamic Development of Malaysia (Jakim) has been placed under the purview of the Malay Rulers, The Star online has reported.

The portal reported that the Conference of Malay Rulers has appointed Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah as chairman of the National Religious Council under a two year tenure. 

 It said in the report, the post of deputy chairman was given to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob. 

 Both, Sultan Sharafuddin and Ismail were appointed today to their positions. 

A palace source told the portal that the decision reaffirms the authority of the Rulers in matters relating to Islam.

 “It will help clear any doubts and confusion about the jurisdiction and authority of Jakim, “ the source was quoted as saying.
