7 rivers in Klang Valley exceed danger level

SEVEN rivers in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor have been reported to exceed the danger level as of 5.30pm today following heavy rain.

According to the Department of Irrigation and Drainage website all the rivers showed an increase of water levels since early this afternoon.

The Klang river station at Tun Perak bridge recorded a reading of 30.12m. Its normal reading is 25m.

Meanwhile Sungai Gombak station in Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur, recorded a reading of 31.99m.

Two water stations in Gombak and two more in Bandar Country Homes and Kampung Melayu Seri Kundang in Rawang are at danger levels.

The Sungai Jenderam station at Jenderam Hilir and the Pulau Meranti station recorded readings above the danger level.

The Sungai Klang station in USJ 1 was reported to have risen above the danger level with a reading of 12.57m.

According to the website, as of 5.45pm, the water levels of rivers in Kedah, Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Selangor are at danger level.

A downpour this afternoon has caused flash floods in several parts of Kuala Lumpur.

Early reports said Jalan Kuchai Lama is badly affected, with several roads cut off by rising water. Jalan Pinang is also flooded.

Affected areas are the Tabung Haji tunnel, Jalan Chan Sow Lin tunnel, Jalan Pudu, Jalan Pahang, Jalan Sri Permaisuri and Jalan Tun Razak.

The Smart Tunnel was closed from 5pm onwards to allow the flood waters to drain.

Due to the heavy rains and flooding in Kuala Lumpur, Tenaga Nasional shut down several power substations. The list of stations is available on their FaceBook page.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob tweeted that ministries and agencies have taken immediate steps to ensure the safety of everyone.

The Selangor Fire and Rescue department shared pictures of flooded homes in Sungai Buloh.

Flash floods were reported in several areas in Johor.

Heavy rainfall before and during the weekend of December 17 caused heavy floods in Perak, Pahang, Selangor, Malacca and Negri Sembilan.

More than 70,000 people were displaced and 55 others were killed.

Selangor was one of the worst-hit states, where thousands of flood victims were evacuated. – March 7, 2022.
