Malaysia breaks record again with 33,209 new Covid cases

MALAYSIA posted a new record of 33,209 fresh Covid-19 infections yesterday, the Health Ministry said.

The daily figures beat the previous day’s record of 32,467 cases.

The Health Ministry also reported 78 deaths yesterday that were linked to Covid-19, 22 of which were dead-on-arrival (DOA) cases.

Health Minister Khairy Jamaluddin had earlier clarified that not all daily deaths took place in a single day but were reported by the medical facilities to the ministry within a average 72-hours turnaround time.

This means the 78 deaths reported occured within the last three days.

The latest number of fatalities brought the coronavirus death toll to 33,106.

The virus has now infected 3.53 million people.

Of the record number of infections yesterday, almost 40% of them were in the Klang Valley.

Selangor registered the most number of infections with 8,897, followed by Kuala Lumpur (4,105) and Putrajaya (187).

Other states reporting new cases were Kedah (3,060), Penang (2,592), Johor (2,359), Sabah (2,131), Negri Sembilan (1,679), Kelantan (1,572), Perak (1,544), Pahang (1,535), Sarawak (1,333), Terengganu (938), Malacca (741), Perlis (270) and Labuan (266).

Meanwhile, 15 of yesterday’s deaths took place in Sabah, Kedah (12) and Johor (11).

Selangor reported 10 deaths, Penang (8), Perak (6), Pahang (4), Terengganu (3), Negri Sembilan, Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur (2 each), and Kelantan, Malacca and Perlis (1 each).

Only Labuan and Putrajaya did not register deaths linked to the virus.

Of the 22 DOA cases, nine were in Sabah, Pahang (3), Selangor (2), and Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Penang, Sarawak and Kuala Lumpur (1 each).

The fatality rate stood at 0.2% and the cumulative fatality rate, at 0.9%. – March 5, 2022.
