Klang Valley on full alert for flash floods

AS downpours continue in the Klang Valley, authorities go on high alert for flash floods, The Star reported.

The authorities are on standby in case they need to immediately mobilise their teams. 

Authorities in Shah Alam and Klang are using real-time data to monitor the situation.

The Shah Alam City Council is monitoring its reservoirs and pumps to ensure the facilities are functioning.

They are closely watching Taman Sri Muda, Taman Mesra, Kampung Kebun Bunga, Padang Jawa and Section 13, which were previously affected by flash floods.

Klang Municipal Council president Noraini Roslan said they are using closed-circuit television cameras to carry out round-the-clock flood monitoring.

“A quick response unit is on standby and we have increased checks on drainage networks,” she was quoted as saying.

Last year, heavy rain before and over the weekend of December 17-18 caused floods in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Malacca, Negri Sembilan, Perak and Pahang

The floods had displaced more than 70,000 people at its height and claimed 54 lives. Selangor was one of the worst-hit states.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob had blamed the lack of preparation by the Selangor government for the floods.

The Petaling Jaya City Council has identified 34 flash flood hotspots and allocated about RM28 million to carry out flood mitigation projects.

Mayor Mohamad Azhan Md Amir said the flood management will cover pre-flood, during flood and post-flood.

Meanwhile, Subang Jaya residents are urged to look out for flood-related alerts on the city council’s social media platforms.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has been giving updates on flood alerts through its electronic billboards.

DBKL says its operations room at Menara DBKL 1 in Jalan Raja Laut will be activated to coordinate response in the event of floods. – March 4, 2022.
