POLICE will recommend an inquest into the death of M. Vasanthapiriya, 14, who was accused of stealing a teacher’s iPhone, The Star Online reports today.

“We have to complete the necessary (investigation). Once that is done, we will give our recommendation to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) office that an inquest be conducted on this case,” Penang CID chief Zainol Samah said at a press conference in George Town yesterday.

The case was first investigated for attempted suicide before it was classified under sudden death, he said.

The investigation paper on the attempted suicide was submitted to the DPP’s office which responded with no further action (NFA), said Zainol.

Police are also investigating a report lodged by Vasanthapiriya’s uncle against the teacher and another report on the slanderous claims against the teacher.

The DPP has requested police to conduct further investigations to find new leads, he said.

On January 24, a teacher allegedly accused the SMK Methodist Nibong Tebal form two pupil of stealing her iPhone 6 at the school before sending her home later.

Vasanthapiriya was later found unconscious in her room while her father R. Muniandy, 52, was discussing the issue with the teacher.

She was rushed to Sungai Bakap Hospital before being transferred to Seberang Jaya Hospital where she died on February 1. – February 9, 2018.
