WARISAN is not in Johor to break up the opposition vote in the state elections despite only contesting in their seats, vice president Junz Wong said.
“We chose the seats based on the support we can gather here and these seats have more than 55% Malay voters,” said Wong during a press conference held for its candidate Lee Ming Wen in Bukit Batu today.
The former DAP assemblyman for Likas (2013-2016) added that Warisan did not pick the seats to contest based on the incumbents.
He said the party was only launched in Peninsular Malaysia on December 17 and did not have enough time to even establish branches.
Wong, who is now the Tanjung Aru assemblyman in Sabah, said that Pakatan Harapan is no longer the popular choice for voters and Warisan was just providing an alternative to peninsula voters who want a non-rac- based political party.
The Sabahan was responding to DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who accused Warisan of trying to split DAP’s votes in the Johor elections.
Warisan is contesting six out of 56 seats in the state polls.
The six seats are Hishamuddin Busri in Pekan Nenas, Sandara Segaran Arumugam (Bekok), Chen Hain Kai (Johor Jaya), Mohamed Noor Suleiman (Mahkota), Lee Ming Wen (Bukit Batu) and Mohamed Ridza Bush (Permas).
Of the six seats, Bekok, Johor Jaya, Pekan Nanas are held by DAP while Mahkota and Bukit Batu are held by PKR. Bersatu won the Permas seat in the last election.
But Wong said that Warisan intends to contest against Barisan Nasional (BN).
“After this there may be the Kedah elections and over there we will contest against BN,” said Wong, who confessed that Warisan’s strength is in the mixed seats.
Candidate Lee, who is a former PKR leader, declined to comment on the question that Warisan is in Johor to break up opposition votes. – March 1, 2022.
