NEWLY elected Satok assemblyman, Ibrahim Baki, has been appointed Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chief whip in the state legislative assembly.

The appointment was announced by Chief Minister Abang Johari Openg at a dinner with the four-party ruling coalition’s elected representatives in Kuching last night.

The four parties are the lead party Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP); Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP).

Ibrahim, who is also PBB’s deputy secretary-general and GPS treasurer-general, said he is humbled with the trust that the chief minister has in him.

In thanking the coalition’s presidents for their nomination and endorsement, Ibrahim said he hoped to “instil a sense of propriety and decency” in the legislature and ensure that it continues “to be seen as a bastion to uphold and protect Sarawak rights”.

“This is as well as exercising its functions as the highest law-making body in the state as we continue to seek more restoration of Sarawak rights as per the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and Inter-Government Committee Report (IGC) 1962 under the Federal Constitution,” said Ibrahim. At 66, he is the oldest of the first-term assemblymen to be elected.

The legislative assembly will reconvene in May. – February 17, 2022.
