21 new Covid deaths, 2,011 hospital admissions

COVID-19 hospitalisation has been steadily rising, logging 2,011 admissions yesterday as 21 deaths from the coronavirus were reported, the Health Ministry said.

The hospital utilisation rate stood at 67.5%, with the bulk of it – 60.9% – comprising Covid-19 patients.

There are 204 patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), with 116 on ventilators.

The number of hospital admissions indicates the severity of the virus. The hospital utilisation includes bed usage as well as the number of patients in ICU and on ventilators.

The Klang Valley accounted for 456 of total Covid-19 admissions with a bulk of the cases – 354 – from Selangor.

There were 74 admissions in Kuala Lumpur and 28 in Putrajaya.

Other states that reported new admissions were Johor 387, Kedah (112), Kelantan (100), Malacca (50), Negri Sembilan (102), Pahang (76), Perak (168), Perlis (27), Penang (77), Sabah (330), Sarawak (84), Terengganu (34) and Labuan (8).

Meanwhile, of the 27,831 cases reported yesterday, the highest to date for Malaysia, 8,516 came from the Klang Valley.

According to the Health Ministry’s GitHub database, Selangor logged 6,647 infections, Kuala Lumpur (1,726) and Putrajaya (143).

After Selangor, Sabah logged the highest number of infections with 5,082, followed by Kedah (2,961).

Johor reported 2,606 cases, Kelantan (1,914), Malacca (596), Negri Sembilan (1,460), Pahang (948), Perak (423), Perlis (114), Penang (2,142), Sarawak (307), Terengganu (456) and Labuan (297).

The fresh infections bring the number of active cases in the country to 202,884.

Of the 21 Covid-19 deaths, nine were dead on arrival.

Sabah reported the highest number of deaths with nine, followed by Johor and Perak with four each.

Kedah reported two deaths while Kelantan and Negri Sembilan reported one each.

There were no fatalities in the other states. – February 17, 2022.
