46% of MACC cases involved civil servants

ALMOST half of the cases the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission investigated between 2014 and 2016 involved civil servants.

“Of the 2,329 cases investigated by the MACC between 2014 and 2016, 1,088 or 46% involved civil servants. We have to accept the fact that corruption among civil servants has reached a critical level,” said MACC deputy chief commissioner (prevention) Shamshun Baharin, The Star Online reported today.

And despite a cash incentive scheme given to civil servants who report corrupt practices in the civil service, only 214 whistle-blowers have stepped up in the past six years.

The government started the ringgit-to-ringgit incentive in 2011 to reduce corruption among civil servants.

The total amount paid out over the past six years was RM384,000, said Shamshun.

The MACC deputy commissioner said the 54% of the 2,329 cases involved younger civil servants under 40.

Shamshun was speaking at a press conference after the signing of the corruption-free pledge between the state Religious and Islamic Affairs Department and MACC in Alor Star yesterday. – May 24, 2017.
