THESSALONIKI police said they had issued 10 arrest warrants in connection with the fatal stabbing of a 19-year-old football fan last week and the injuries of his two friends.

Police said six of the 10 have already been arrested.

A 23-year-old man is to appear before prosecutors today after being arrested last week as a suspect in the attack outside the stadium of top-flight club Aris.

“We had said from the first moment that it is a matter of honour for the Greek police, for justice, for the state as a whole, for the investigation into the murder of 19-year-old Alkis Kampanos to reach the end. To find the culprits and bring them to justice,” said Citizen Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos.

Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is to chair a meeting today to discuss violence in sports, where measures are expected to be announced.

The meeting is to be attended by Theodorikakos, Justice Minister Konstantinos Tsiaras and Deputy Sports Minister Lefteris Avgenakis.

On Friday, police in Thessaloniki and Athens carried out searches at various Greek football fan clubs and confiscated a number of weapons.

According to police, 13 such clubs were raided in the northern city of Thessaloniki and four in Athens.

The fan clubs involved were from top-flight teams PAOK, Aris, AEK, Panathinaikos and Olympiakos.

Dozens of knifes, axes, flares, wooden and medal rods, smoke bombs and motorcycle helmets were confiscated during the operations.

No arrests were made during the raids, police said. – AFP, February 7, 2022.
