Drains in the neighbourhood start to overflow following a heavy downpour and water levels reached the front porch of several houses as residents scrambled to move their valuables to higher ground.

A vendor, who only wanted to be known as Letchumy, said she was worried that it might flood again.

“The drains are clogged mainly because of the rubbish that was dumped by residents following last month’s flood.

“The authorities were slow in clearing the rubbish, so the residents threw their rubbish into the drains,” she said.

Raj Kumar, 36, said he was worried that his house might get flooded again if the rain does not subside in the next couple of hours.

The heavy downpour started just after 2pm today.

Residents park their car on roadside pavements as flash floods hit Taman Sri Muda.

“We just overcame a massive flood a month ago and we can’t afford to face that again,” he said.

Meanwhile, a Shah Alam city council officer who was present at the scene said water is slowly receding and said things will get back to normal soon.

Heavy rainfall before and over the weekend of December 17-18 caused massive flooding in several states, including parts of central Peninsular Malaysia such as Selangor, Malacca, Negeri Sembilan, Perak and Pahang.

This was unusual given that floods around that time of the year typically strike east coast states.

The floods displaced more than 70,000 people at its height and killed 55.

Selangor was one of the worst-hit states where thousands had to be evacuated. – January 24, 2022.
