Dr Mahathir in stable condition, says daughter

FORMER prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is in a stable condition and responding well to treatment at the National Heart Institute (IJN), his daughter Marina Mahathir said today. 

“For the past two days, Dr Mahathir has been treated in IJN following a successful elective procedure on January 8,” she said in a statement this evening.

“His condition is currently stable and is responding well to treatment.”

On behalf of her family, Marina asked that people pray for Dr Mahathir’s speedy recovery 

Earlier this evening, Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob was seen arriving at the hospital to visit Dr Mahathir.

Later, in a tweet, Ismail told of his visit to Dr Mahathir, adding that he also met the latter’s wife, Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali. 

“I hope the family of Dr Mahathir will continue to remain strong,” he tweeted. 

The 96-year-old Langkawi MP was admitted for an elective medical procedure on January 7 and discharged on January 13. 

He was admitted for a “full medical check-up and further observation” to the same hospital last month.

The two-time prime minister has had a history of heart ailments, suffering his first heart attack at the age of 64 in 1989. He suffered two more heart attacks in 2006 and underwent a quadruple bypass. 

He was treated for a chest infection in November 2013, and again admitted with a similar complaint in August 2016. – January 22, 2022.
