FOUR Indian nationals’ bid to illegally enter the United States (US) failed after they froze to death at the US-Canada border.

Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar yesterday tweeted: “Shocked by the report that four Indian nationals, including an infant, have lost their lives at the US-Canada border.”

Ambassadors in both countries have been urged to urgently respond to the situation, he added.

Indian ambassador to the US Taranjit Singh Sandhu said: “We are in touch with US authorities on their ongoing investigation.”

A 47-year-old man has been charged with human smuggling after the bodies were found in Canada, just a few metres from the US border, according to a report by the Associated Press.

The four are believed to be part of a group of illegal migrants, some of whom have been apprehended after crossing into the US.

“We are very concerned that this attempted crossing may have been facilitated, and that these individuals, including an infant, were left on their own in the middle of a blizzard,” Royal Canadian Mounted Police assistant commissioner Jane MacLatchy was quoted as saying by USA Today. – Bernama, January 22, 2022.
