THE group that organised the #TangkapAzamBaki protest today said it will do it again if the authorities do not act against the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief.
Undi18 activist Qyira Yusri said they expected Putrajaya to act after their protest today.
“We expect the government to take immediate action towards Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Azam Baki,” she said after the rally.
Despite the police shutdown of the Bangsar light rail transit station and diversion of traffic from the area, some 200 people turned up at the location.
Qyira said they were heartened by the turnout, which consisted mainly of the young.
“Although we are not rallying against a politician, it’s great to see the younger generation stand up against corruption,” she said, adding the protest was driven by civil society groups.
Activist Adam Adli Abdul Halim agreed with Qyira on possibility of having another street rally if no action is taken against Azam.
“We will continue with many more campaigns like this until Azam Baki is investigated,” he said.
“Today has been a successful protest because we see the reaction of the government to shut down Kuala Lumpur.”
The rally, organised by civil society groups and political organisations, was made illegal after police obtained a court order banning gatherings at the Sogo shopping mall, Dataran Merdeka and Masjid Jamek.
The organisers then changed the venue to the Bangsar LRT station, but police closed the area and roads surrounding it after learning about the switch.
The rally was held to demand the arrest of Azam following allegations that he bought millions of shares in 2015 and 2016. – January 22, 2022.
